Why tram clearways matter for inner-east moves
What a tram clearway means
A tram clearway zone prohibits all stopping on the road during designated hours — typically 7–9am and 4–7pm on weekdays. A removals truck on a clearway corridor cannot legally stop to load or unload during those hours. Since December 2020, Boroondara tram clearway zones have been tow-away zones, not just fine zones.
The permit reality
Boroondara Council does not issue a dedicated removalist parking permit — the Tradesperson Permit explicitly excludes heavy vehicles. Your practical options: start before the clearway begins, park on the nearest cross-street, or call Boroondara Council on (03) 9278 4444 to discuss your specific address and date.
Period-home access
Boroondara has 14,629 properties under Heritage Overlay — the largest number of any Victorian council. Original driveway openings from the Victorian and Edwardian eras (typically 2.7–3.0m) have not been widened due to heritage constraints. Planning the crew, truck size and carry distance around the actual property is what separates an inner-east specialist from a generic quote.
The best time to move
For tram-route addresses, a 7am or 7:30am start gets the truck loaded before the morning clearway begins. A mid-morning start (9:15am) avoids both peaks. Weekday afternoons after 7pm are also clear. Mid-week and mid-month moves avoid the month-end rush when removalists book out earliest.
